Activity 1: Introduction To Logistics
Teacher and Learning Activities
Students are invited to access and evaluate their existing knowledge of Transport, Logistics and Supply Chains, raise questions or avenues of enquiry and set learning goals to be reviewed at the end of the unit.
WHAT DO WE KNOW? WHAT DO WE WANT TO KNOW?
Write 'Transport, Logistics and Supply Chains' on the board. Explain that this is an industry that plays a very important part in their lives, although they may not yet realise this. Discuss how this might be the case.
Distribute Student Materials Activity 1. Ask students to circle any words in the Key Vocabulary Box (1a) that they do not know the meaning of or of which they are unsure. Use a Think, Pair, Share strategy to discuss the vocabulary. Ask share groups to contribute to a class definition of these words and highlight any words that require further research.
Read the Quotation. Using the Think, Pair Share strategy, discuss with the class what impact the industry might have on the region. Why might Victoria be "the natural location for business, manufacturing and associated freight transport, distribution and storage activities."? (Refer to Teacher Notes and www.supplychainvictoria.com.au/aboutus)
Take feedback from class, prompting students to pose questions reflecting the gaps in their knowledge. Ask students to complete the Learning Goals Table (1b) in their books, identifying things they already know about the industry and things they want to know, or increase their knowledge about.
As a possible extension, direct students to use search engines and Website Links for Initial Research to make initial enquiries. This research may generate more specific questions to add to their tables.
