Information for Prospective Employers
TDT Victoria, the principal source of industry advice about training to the Victorian Government has developed a Cadetship program to encourage young people into the industry.
Ours is a rapidly growing industry, with the freight load in Australia alone predicted to double by around 2015. The Transport & Logistics industry has an ageing workforce and it also suffers from having a poor image. Basically the industry is not considered a top career choice for young people.
With these things in mind TDT Victoria has developed a program to encourage exit Year 12 students into the industry. This program is not about truck driving.
The Cadets are employed by industry and will complete their Diploma of Logistics in two years. During this time they will rotate through the business and learn how a business works. For example for the first six months they could be placed in a general administration area learning many of the basic tasks. During the second six months they may work in an operational role. The rotation is dependent on the business needs. This would also give the Cadet an understanding of the hands on side of business.
The second year may see them move back to Administration but into a higher level, perhaps learning about budgeting, OH&S, HR and finance. The last six months could see the Cadet placed in a specialised role. This would be where the business would see the individual Cadet's future.
All off the job training is conducted by TAFE. Cadets attend four 2-week study blocks in the first year. All training is supporting the type of role the Cadet potentially undertakes in the workplace. At the completion of the program the Cadets will have completed a Certificate IV in Logistics and Supply Chain Principles and a Diploma in Transport & Distribution (Logistics).
The program has been enthusiastically welcomed by industry to date and we are looking to expand the program.
We need industry placements across Victoria and we are seeking Transport, Logistics or manufacturing companies to take on a Cadet.
We expect that the only cost to companies for the training will be an enrolment fee and cost for materials of approximately $1,500 per year.
TDT Victoria vets the applications, recruits cadets and conducts meetings with companies and training providers, as well as managing issues that may arise.
As an added activity to the Cadetship, during the year Cadets visit various companies to experience the depth and breadth of the Industry. If you would like to host the cadets at your company please contact TDT Victoria
