Transport and Logistics Course Guide

Choosing a career path can be a difficult proposition. Finding the relevant information about courses related to your career path can be even harder, particularly if your choices involve transport and logistics. TDT Victoria is currently engaged in a project to collate a comprehensive list of education opportunities that lead to career paths within the transport and logistics industry.
The project not only identifies career paths for school leavers wishing to enter the workforce, it also provides focus with regard to up skills and training opportunities for those workers already within the industry. Those looking for such programs or to simply re-tool will find the course guide informative and easily navigational. This will be the most comprehensive listing ever compiled for transport and logistics. We anticipate it will be the “go-to” resource for the industry.

Transport and Logistics Curriculum

AT TDT Victoria, not only are we helping steer the industry towards highly skilled training opportunities, we are contributing our breadth of T&L knowledge to secondary school curriclumns of today. TDT Victoria is currently developing a social studies/geography teacher's kit that helps schools explore the main issues at the fore front of Australia's logistical challenges. Topics such as transport and product distribution are introduced to students exposing them to the intricacies and mechanics behind the scenes which are involved in an industry worth almost 10% of Australia’s GDP. The material is interactive and encourages student involvement in real life T and L problems. This challenging and informative package will initially target lower secondary students and it will show them where their interests and T and L intersect. It will demonstrate there is more to the industry than merely driving a truck.

TOLL Virtual

Victorian school students and industry are working together in a new venture to beat the shortage of skills in the transport industry by operating a simulated transport business as part of the school curriculum.

Toll Virtual is a national initiative coordinated by TDT Australia, the national skills council for transport and logistics in collaboration with the TOLL Group, that has resulted in the establishment of eight simulated TDL ‘practice firms’ nationally.  The project is part of the Australian Network of Practice Firms (ANPF), training businesses that students manage and operate as part of their learning programs.  Each of these simulated businesses (or 'practice firms', or 'virtual enterprises' or 'training companies') follows real-world business practices and trades within a virtual economy

The Victorian practice firm operates with a cluster of schools in the Werribee district, with 15 Year 11 students, a TDT Victoria facilitator, a school coordinator and five mentors from Toll business units based in Victoria.  Mirroring the work carried out by real life business, the students work for a minimum of three hours per week in Toll Virtual, conducting business with over 130 practice firms from other industries and schools in a simulated economy.

Through the experience, the students are developing the enterprise skills involved in business planning, management, marketing and promotion, as well as dealing with all the complexities that exist in ‘real’ TDL companies – like scheduling and rostering, types of products to be delivered and relevant technologies.  An emphasis on employability skills is a key component of the program.

Participating in the practice firm allows students to gain recognised qualifications such as Certificate I and II in Transport & Distribution (Administration), and offers a pathway to diplomas and advanced diplomas in Logistics Management as well as into traineeships and New Apprenticeships.

Careers in TDL

The Victorian Department of Industry, Innovation and Regional Development with support from the Department of Education and Training has funded a project to promote careers in the TDL industry.  TDT Victoria conducted the project in collaboration with the Victoria TDL Industry Round Table.

In this time of very low unemployment and an ageing workforce competition for young job seekers between industries is intensifying.  The imperative to recruit the best quality candidates possible is essential to the economic viability of Victorian Supply Chain.

The project comprised 8 initiatives conducted in different regions.  Engaging Youth documents youth, community and industry perceptions about the industry, and ways to communicate information about the industry.  Four initiatives describe TDL related programs conducted with secondary schools, Licence to Work Ready addresses regional TDL recruitment and training issues.  Forecasting Labour Demand presents a model for accurate labour forecasting by regional employers.

The report, to be launched on October 16, 2006 is presented with findings and discussion of each initiative.  A TDL career information CD and a DVD illustrating a school based apprentice program accompany the report.

The Careers in TDL: Local Initiatives Report offers important insights into the triggers for making critical decisions; how best to communicate TDL career information to school leavers, and ways to link school based training directly to TDL careers and education.  The different TDL career and recruitment challenges in metropolitan and regional areas are also documented.

Victoria Supply Chain Consultative Group

An industry government partnership supported by the Department of Industry, Innovation & Regional Development and the Department of Education this forum provides a range of opportunities to promote and implement training within the TDL industry.  From establishing industry networks in regional Victoria (Wodonga, Mildura and the La Trobe Valley) to the development of a new industry action plan this group brings together a diverse group of industry stakeholders.

Careers Strategy

As the project manager TDT Victoria was responsible for the development of a “Career Kit” which showcased a range of training and development activities within TDL across Victoria. The kit contained eight examples of programs, products and research activities that demonstrated best practice in training and development within the TDL industry.

E Learning

Fatigue management continues to be a significant issue for the road freight sector and one that has become the focus of new regulatory regimes. In an attempt to utilise current technology as part of a management strategy to tackle this issue TDT Victoria worked in collaboration with TOLL SPD to develop an E Learning model to provide underpinning knowledge and self paced assessment for employees who needed to become familiar with this subject.

Maritime WELL Project

Continuing on from the WELL project which resulted in assessment materials being developed in 2005/06 TDT Victoria has secured additional funding to extend the trial of these products. These trials will seek to include RTOs in both Victoria and Queensland.

Charter and Ferry Operator Crew Training

In response to a request from Marine Safety Victoria, local operators and the Maritime Union of Australia TDT Victoria has been working with these stakeholders to develop a training regime for deck hands working on these vessels. While the initial program may not reflect full competencies the training program will be predicated on material within the national training package.

Business Activity Harmonisation Study (BAHS)

Having successfully developed a model interactive learning resource TDT Victoria have now been commissioned to develop a full web based resource that covers all aspects of the import/export process through the Port of Melbourne.

Careers Day

Careers Day continues to evolve as an event that seeks to inform those responsible for providing career advice in schools. This year’s event was conducted in conjunction with the Supply Chain Summit, an initiative of the Industry Round Table.
